Digital Lab Support

Digital Lab Support That Turns Your Scanner Into a Tool for Better Clinical Outcomes

Intraoral scanners have been in general practice long enough that most dentists are past the learning curve of simply using the device. The next question is whether your lab is actually using digital workflow to improve clinical outcomes, or just converting your scan file into the same traditional fabrication process with different input.

A scan that arrives at a lab without review, gets converted to a model, and goes into a milling queue without any digital planning is not a digital workflow. It is analog fabrication with a digital front end. The fit problems, shade mismatches, and remake rates are exactly the same as with physical impressions, sometimes worse, because scan quality issues that would have been obvious in a physical impression are invisible until the crown seats poorly.

OmniWorks Dental Laboratory in the Bronx, NY treats digital submission as an opportunity to deliver better restorations, not just faster ones. Here is how our digital support actually improves what your patients receive.

The First Place Digital Workflow Fails, and How OmniWorks Fixes It

The most common failure in digital case handling is the scan quality review. Labs that process digital cases at volume do not have a technician reviewing each scan file before the case enters fabrication. Scan voids at the preparation margin, scan body seating errors on implant cases, and missing opposing model data are not flagged; they are milled into the restoration, and you discover the problem at the seating appointment.

At OmniWorks, every digital scan submission is reviewed by a technician before it enters the design phase. We check margin capture quality, opposing model completeness, interocclusal record accuracy, and scan body seating on implant cases. If we identify a problem, we contact you before we do anything else. A rescan request takes two minutes at the chair. A remake takes two weeks.

Scanner Compatibility, All Major Systems Accepted and Reviewed

iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Planmeca Emerald, and Carestream CS 3600

We accept digital case files from all major intraoral scanner systems, including iTero, 3Shape TRIOS, Planmeca Emerald, and Carestream CS 3600. If you use a system not listed here, contact us before your first submission to confirm file compatibility. Scanner technology evolves quickly, and compatibility lists change; we would rather confirm before you submit than discover an incompatibility when your case is already at the lab.

For practices transitioning from physical impressions to digital submission, we offer a supported onboarding process. Contact us to schedule a brief call where we walk you through our digital submission requirements, scan quality criteria, and how to prepare different case types for scan submission.

How Digital Planning Produces Better Restorations Than Traditional Workflows

Marginal Fit Designed in 3D Before Milling Begins

We build every case from a precise 3D digital model and design the restoration in CAD software before generating any tool paths. Marginal fit, occlusal contact location, proximal contact tightness, and connector geometry for bridge cases are all specified in the digital model and verified before milling. This level of pre-fabrication verification is not possible in traditional wax-and-cast workflows.

The clinical result is a crown that is engineered to seat passively before it is milled. Passive seating is no longer the result of the technician’s eye and hand; it is a verified parameter in the digital design.

Digital Preview for Complex Esthetic Cases

For multi-unit anterior cases, veneer sets, anterior bridges, and full-arch esthetic cases, we can provide a digital preview of the designed restoration for your review before fabrication begins. This allows you to confirm that the tooth shape, length, width proportions, and midline are aligned with your treatment plan and your patient’s expectations before we begin layering.

Digital preview adds time to the front end of a complex case. It eliminates the risk of a full-arch veneer case coming back with a tooth shape the patient did not approve. For high-value esthetic cases, the preview step is worth it.

Scan Quality Feedback That Makes Your Next Case Better

When we identify a scan quality issue at case intake, a void at a margin, insufficient buccal corridor coverage, or an improperly seated scan body, we document it and communicate it clearly. This is not a critique of the clinician. It is information that helps improve scan quality on subsequent cases and reduces the rate of rescan requests over time.

Practices that work with OmniWorks on a consistent basis see their rescan rates drop significantly over the first few months as the feedback loop between lab review and clinical scanning technique closes. Better scans produce better restorations with fewer delays.

Scanner Compatibility, All Major Systems Accepted and Reviewed

We operate with HIPAA-compliant digital case management from submission to delivery. Patient scan data is handled in compliance with current HIPAA requirements for protected health information. Our digital submission portal is encrypted. Case records are retained and accessible for the period required under applicable standards.

If your practice has specific data handling requirements beyond standard HIPAA compliance, contact us to discuss before your first digital submission.
